General practice support to the Taranaki COVID-19 vaccination programme

Pinnacle Midlands Health Network, working alongside our general practices, are really rising to the challenge, delivering COVID-19 vaccinations in the region – and working hard to ensure good uptake.

Currently there are 11 practices participating in the Taranaki programme, with some working alongside other providers such as pharmacies to support their communities.

The rapid shift to Alert Level 4 barely disrupted the process, with medical centres re-engineering their processes nearly overnight to continue delivering vaccinations in a safe way for patients and staff alike.

As part of the Alert Level response all Pinnacle practices have strict ‘red’ and ‘green’ zones to ensure any patient with potential symptoms of COVID-19 are kept from mixing with ‘green’ zone patients. COVID-19 vaccinations are now built into the green stream work.

Whenever an outbreak, potential scare or a lockdown is announced the demand for COVID-19 testing goes through the roof. Practices work to not only meet this demand, but continue to support all their patients with their health needs. On top of this many are now participating in the vaccination roll out.

Pinnacle general practices take a whānau ora approach, ensuring all those in the whānau aged 12 and over are offered a vaccine to give the best protection to the elderly or more vulnerable people within each household “bubble”.

Practice and Pinnacle staff have pitched in and supported the mass vaccination events organised by Taranaki DHB, providing extra hands to vaccinate as well as supporting administration and patient flow. This has seen some individuals working tirelessly throughout August and into September to vaccinate as many people as quickly as possible.

Pinnacle staff have also assisted their practices with activities such as working through the onboarding process to become a vaccination site and making phone calls to high priority patients, ensuring they are assisted to make and keep a vaccination appointment.
