Tom James

General practitioner, practice owner and board member

Originally from Bristol in the UK, Tom James studied medicine at the University of Southampton. He joined Kaiti Medical Centre in 1994. Dr James enjoys Gisborne's relaxed lifestyle, friendly people, beaches and surf. In 2011 his practice moved to purpose-built premises and amalgamated with three other solo practices to become Three Rivers Medical, with a current enrolled population of 18,800.

His current workload is 6/10ths general practice consulting, and 3/10ths management and governance and 1/10th visiting an industrial occupational clinic one session a week. Key to the sustainability of general practice is exposure to medical students and young doctors to the speciality. To support this, he provides oversight to colleagues and teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students

In 2009 he was honoured to receive the Vince Murphy Scholarship for the two-year diploma course in Strategic Leadership. This led to a shift in thinking from "fixing" to "coaching". It is helping his organisation create and maintain a positive organisational culture, where clinicians and non-clinical team members can thrive, flourish and grow as human beings.
