School-based health services

In the Waikato Pinnacle provide school-based health services funded by Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand in lower decile (decile one to five) high schools, wharekura, teen parent units and alternative education sites.

As the regional arm of a national service, our services are widespread across the rohe, from Te Kauwhata in the north, to Coromandel, Whitianga and Manaia in the east, Raglan to the west and Taumarunui in the south.

School clinics remove some of the barriers that prevent young people from accessing health services, like cost, transport, and fear of talking to a health professional. They also provide a way to encourage young people to stay engaged in the health system once they leave secondary school, and to support them in developing the confidence to reach out for help and support when they need it.

School-based health services take a holistic approach to supporting young people, improving their wellbeing and resilience to ensure they are ready to learn and are more likely to achieve at school.

Common presentations to the service include general medical issues, sore throats, sexual and reproductive health, mental health and accidents or injuries. Our clinicians can refer to other services as required and our team of youth-friendly doctors and nurses work hard to make a young person’s experience of healthcare a positive one.

If your child’s or young person’s school has a health service, more information is available via your school or learning site.
