The Te Manawa Taki Workforce Hub has been established to support the primary and community workforce to access training, funding, and development opportunities across the region.
Our focus is on strengthening the local workforce so care can be delivered closer to whānau, improving access and equity across Te Manawa Taki.
The Hub brings together workforce initiatives funded through Health New Zealand, helping coordinate training, enablement funding, and regional workforce development efforts. It also provides a regional view of workforce needs to help inform future planning and investment.
What is the first initiative we are supporting?
The first initiative the Hub is supporting is the EOI process for planned care training, available from June 2026. GPs can apply for funding to undertake training so they can deliver more planned care services in the community.
This includes support for:
course fees
backfill or locum cover
travel and accommodation where needed
The aim is to bring care closer to whānau, supporting equitable access to both care and training, and strengthening local communities.
The PHO Regional Workforce Development Lead for Te Manawa Taki will be in touch with PHOs and general practices in the regions to invite practices to express an interest in this initiative shortly.
More detailed information will be provided soon along with the link to apply.
What is coming next?
Health NZ will roll out further workforce initiatives over the coming months that will include support from PHO regional workforce leads.
This includes:
nursing workforce development
medical training and placements, including CBA placements
interdisciplinary planned care training
unregulated workforce training
cyber security training
PRIME training for rural clinicians
CBA placement fund administration
