Nurse Practitioner Training Support Scheme

Applications for the 2027 nurse practitioner practicum and NPTSS funding open on 10 August and close on 27 September 2026.

For 2027, most candidates can complete one application through the NPTSS website. This application covers:

• entry to the nurse practitioner practicum delivered by their tertiary education provider

• NPTSS funding

Candidates studying through Massey University need to complete two separate applications:

• an application to Massey University for the nurse practitioner practicum

• an application through the NPTSS website for funding

Candidates studying through other tertiary education providers complete one application through the NPTSS website for both the practicum and funding. Once accepted, candidates formally enrol with their education provider.

The NPTSS website provides current eligibility criteria, application guidance and downloadable information for candidates, employers and clinical supervisors. This includes a candidate checklist, employer letter of support and clinical supervisor information.

The scheme supports the development of the nurse practitioner workforce in areas of significant community and workforce need. Priority areas include primary and community healthcare, mental health and addiction, Māori and Pasifika health, rural communities, and populations experiencing high health needs or deprivation.

A key aim is to increase the number of Māori and Pasifika nurse practitioners and improve equity through access to nurse practitioner-led services.

The NPTSS supports the final practicum year and transition into nurse practitioner practice. Other postgraduate funding, including the Registered Nurse Primary Care Scholarship and regional or district funding, may support eligible study completed earlier in the pathway.

Eligibility differs between funding streams, so nurses should check the relevant criteria and discuss their study plans with their manager and tertiary education provider.
